Primary Implant Surgery

Dr Hodge was mentored by some of the best surgeon pioneers in joint arthroplasty in the Harvard Hospital environment where some of the earliest designs, such as the mold arthroplasies of the hip and knee which were designed and implanted in the mid-1930s prior to WWII. He has written journal articles on how to avoid surgical errors as well as designed improved instruments to facilitate less-invasive surgeries.

Revision Implant Surgery

Some of the more common causes of failed implants are:

• Broken Implant
• Loose Implant
• Painful Implant
• Infected Implant

Revision of failed implants can be quite complex. It starts with the doctor making the correct diagnosis, to know what you are being treated for. If the doctor has not diagnosed the problem, then the chance of a successful revision is questionable.
Even after making the correct diagnosis, determining why the implant failed is also important. The revising of failed implants requires extensive skill, knowledge and experience on the surgeon’s part. The surgeon needs to have the correct high-speed bone and metal cutting devices to remove failed &/or broken implants.
The surgeon also needs to be able to predict what materials he will need to reconstruct the defects that will be left after the old implants are removed. This can be a quite complicated and expensive endeavor.

Dr. Hodge has been successfully diagnosing and revising failed implants for over 25 years. He is working on new treatment plans to shorten treatment and recovery time. He also trains and coaches other orthopedic surgeons globally on how to properly diagnosis and perform such surgeries.
