Data Driven Design (3D) Knee
The 3DKnee is a premium high flexion total knee replacement designed and patented by Dr Hodge after a decade of research. The 3DKnee instills confidence through every step of the total knee replacement process, from the surgeon’s joint selection decision, to the surgical procedure and patient post-operative function.
Dr. Hodge has implanted the 3D Knee all over the world and has published results of his surgical outcomes that have shown the 3D Knee design is one of the best high-performance knee arthroplasties in the world.
History
Dr. Hodge began to develop early technology in knee replacement systems in the early 1980’s. He worked with Dr Jorge Galante and engineer Tom Andiacchi while at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Hodge worked with both Drs. Jorge Galante and Joseph Miller on the early Miller-Galante concept of knee replacement, he was able to work closely with the orthopedic industry in Warsaw, Indiana. Dr. Hodge would even stay at Mr. Zimmer’s house in Warsaw on occasion. He also worked on the design of the Miller-Galante Uni-condylar partial knee replacement which both became #1 used knees world-wide.
Since Dr. Hodge had majored in engineering prior to medical school, he had a keen interest in the technology of joint arthroplasty. He and Dr. Andriacchi began some of the early kinematic studies on knee replacements.
Dr. Hodge in 1991 moved his state-of-the art, orthopedic research lab & research team from MIT to West Palm Beach, Florida. There, it was possible to have an extensive ‘Implant Retrieval’ program and these retrieved implants were analyzed by Dr. Hodge’s own scanning electron microscope (SEM) which was the first used in medical applications in Florida.
Drs. Banks and Hodge then became the first to compare implant wear to actual kinematic measurements in the same patients. This completed the loop on design input and allowed Dr. Hodge to design and patent the 3D Knee in 1995.
